Profile
Cheya is a recent graduate of the LLM programme at The Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, where she specialised in international humanitarian law (IHL), international human rights law (IHRL), and international criminal law (ICL). Her LLM thesis explored the intersection of IHL and novel space warfare. She holds a First-Class Honours BCL in Law with Social Justice from University College Dublin (UCD) and completed an international exchange at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where her research focused on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS) and drone warfare. During her internship at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), Cheya contributed to thematic research and policy debate on arms control, disarmament, and challenges posed by emerging weaponry and artificial intelligence (AI). Alongside her academic background, she has gained practical legal experience working in private law in Australia and has also served as an editor for Ireland’s leading student law review. Cheya is currently a mentee with the Vienna Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) and the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), where she is furthering her knowledge in disarmament and non-proliferation issues. Cheya’s research interests include the legal and ethical challenges surrounding AI and the military, outer space as an emerging military domain, disarmament, and LAWS. At the T.M.C Asser Institute, Cheya is looking forward to furthering her knowledge in the intersection of international law and disruptive technologies, particularly focusing on military applications of AI through work on the DILEMA Project.
