Call for intern: Human rights law

Located in the heart of The Hague, the International City of Peace, Justice and Security, the Asser Institute is a leading inter-university research centre in the field of international and European law with a high public and international profile. The institute conducts fundamental and independent policy-oriented research, provides training and education, organises seminars and conferences, and has its own publishing house, Asser Press. 

The Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research (NNHRR) is seeking one full-time intern to assist with the academic coordination and administration of the network and its blog, Human Rights Here. The NNHRR brings together researchers from universities and research institutes across the Netherlands working in the field of human rights. Human Rights Here is the network's academic blog, publishing timely and accessible contributions on human rights law and policy. Key responsibilities 

  • Assisting Stephanie Triefus in the academic coordination and administration of the NNHRR, including 

  • Drafting and editing news items, social media posts, newsletters, and correspondence

  • Maintaining the Network’s website

  • Organising and taking minutes of Steering Committee meetings 

  • Processing membership applications and maintaining member lists

  • Assisting the editorial team in the administration of the Human Rights Here blog, including:

  • Editing and contributing blog posts and managing their publication on the blog website 

  • Corresponding with authors and editors throughout the blog submission and editing process

  • Promoting the solicitation and dissemination of blog posts via social media

  • Contributing to the strategic direction of the blog  

  • Where time permits, assisting with research tasks in the field of business and human rights. Please note that research is not the focus of the internship, and research tasks will be secondary to administrative tasks. 

 

Profile

Applicants must: 

  • Be enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a bachelor's or master's programme in international law.

  • Have a demonstrated interest in human rights law.

  • Be fluent in written and spoken English.

  • Have excellent writing and editing skills, with an eye for accuracy and consistency.

  • Be highly organised, efficient, and attentive to detail.

  • Have a collaborative, supportive, and flexible approach to teamwork.

  • Have outstanding communication skills as well as a good sense of humour. 

 

Conditions 

  • 38 hours per week for a period of 6 months, with possible extension to 9 months. Study commitments are taken into account in task allocation.

  • A stipend of €736 gross per month.

  • Internships at Asser are for students only. This means that you must be registered as a student at a university or a school, and must be eligible to live and work in the Netherlands (either through EU citizenship or a student visa from a Dutch university). Recent graduates (bachelor's and master's) may apply only within the first year of graduation, when 'learning through interning' may still add to your education.

  • The internship is an opportunity to learn in an active and dynamic research environment. Therefore, we expect interns to be present at the Institute in The Hague. It is not a remote working opportunity.

  • Regretfully, the Asser Institute cannot hire students without EU citizenship for internships, unless they already have a Dutch residency and work permit. Please make sure to read this page on internships at the T.M.C. Asser Instituut to make sure you are eligible to apply.

The closing date for applications is 16 June, 23:59h CET Interviews will take place in the week of 7 July or the week of 13 July. The envisaged start date of the 6-month internship is 14 August.
