Governance of AI-driven military technologies and International Law
This innovative two-day training programme will provide you with a deep understanding of military applications of artificial intelligence (AI). It will create a common basis of knowledge around key features of these technologies, their associated risks and benefits, and the various regimes of international law relevant to their governance.
Artificial Intelligence is revolutionising military operations, driving the development of autonomous weapons systems, decision-support tools, and other advanced technologies. However, as innovation accelerates with significant investments from states and corporations, the gap in understanding these technologies - and how they interact with international legal frameworks - poses critical challenges for governance and policy.
Our course aims to contribute to advancing international policy processes and the governance of AI-driven military technologies, including autonomous weapon systems (AWS). The course provides experts and policymakers in the field with:
- Recent and upcoming developments in AI in the military domain
- Knowledge of the different regimes of international law that play a role in the governance of AI-driven military technologies:
- Hard and soft law in Multilateral Arms Control: international disarmament law, and overview of different policy processes (GGE on LAWS, REAIM; UNGA, etc)
- Compliance: international humanitarian law, human rights law, and other relevant regimes
- Accountability: state responsibility, individual criminal responsibility (international criminal law) and other accountability mechanisms
Who should attend?
This accelerated course is designed for policymakers, legal advisors, diplomats and other individuals involved or interested in the development, use, governance and adjudication of AI-enabled military technologies.
