The workshop, organised by the MEMOCRACY project, examines the trajectories of historical memory governance in Latin America and East Asia, and compares them with the European experiences. It explores the scope of the global proliferation of the phenomenon of memory laws, that is various legal measures that govern the representation of the historical past. Most recently, the topic of memory laws has been actively discussed in the comparative scholarship in the context of the legal bans on historical speech, proliferating in Central and Eastern Europe, since 2010s.
The theme of the workshop explores memory laws further, beyond the geographic scope of Europe, where this phenomenon has been relatively well-studied. It offers to (re-)consider the governance of historical memory as a global phenomenon, as well as a comparative research theme pertaining to memory studies, legal scholarship, and international relations in the two regions beyond Europe. For these ends, the event gathers legal scholars, experts from social sciences and practitioners from Latin America and East Asia to discuss the diverse ways these regions have been dealing with memory laws and memory policies, to analyse if better answers to historical challenges have been offered in the legal settings beyond Europe.
