When celebrating 400 years of Mare Liberum, it goes without saying that a scientific conference bringing together a variety of facets and opinions must have a central role in the programme of festivities.
As such, the following Institutions have joined forces to organize such a conference to take place on 11 December 2009:
Hague Academic Coalition (HAC)*, Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS), Stichting Grotiana, the Huygens Institute and Amsterdam Centre for International Law (ACIL) have put together a conference. The organising body is the T.M.C. Asser Instituut.
The conference entitled "Mare Liberum 1609-2009" is spit in two parts:
Morning
This part will address the history of De Groot and his ideas with the title: Mare Liberum revisited.
Afternoon
The actual situation on the thoughts of De Groot: The freedom of the seas revisited: Ocean governance 400 years after Grotius’ Mare Liberum.
