Published 19 January 2024The T.M.C. Asser Instituut's Centre for the Law of EU External Relations (CLEER) and Leiden University are inviting current PhD scholars and early career researchers to submit abstracts for a two-day PhD workshop on the legal implications of the EU's "geopolitical awakening." The workshop will take place at the Asser Institute in The Hague on May 6-7, 2024.
The workshop will explore the challenges and opportunities posed by the EU's growing role as a geopolitical actor in the wake of the war in Ukraine. Participants will discuss how the EU can balance its commitment to multilateralism and international law with its need for strategic autonomy in a complex and uncertain global environment.
Abstracts of no more than 500 words must be submitted by February 10, 2024. Selected participants will be invited to submit a draft paper by April 10, 2024. The papers will be presented and discussed at the workshop, and the organisers aim to publish them in the CLEER paper series subject to peer-review.
A limited number of scholarships will be available to support participation in the workshop. Interested applicants are invited to submit a motivated application of up to 300 words.
The workshop is part of a series of events organised by the Asser Institute and Leiden University to foster research on the EU's role in the world. The next instalment of the PhD Workshop Series is due to take place in November 2024.
