The Asser Institute is searching for a visionary academic director to lead its research and educational initiatives. As chair of the two-member executive board, the academic director will collaborate closely with managing director Kasper Vrolijk to oversee the institute's daily operations. The position involves steering the institute’s strategic research agenda, attracting external funding, and representing the institute both within academia and in broader social and legal contexts.
This dynamic role demands a distinguished scholar in international or European public or private law, with a proven track record of publications in top-tier journals, the acquisition of research grants, leadership positions in academia or (inter)national organisations, relevant research and policy networks, and the successful supervision of PhDs and postdocs.
Pivotal role
The academic director will play a pivotal role in shaping the institute’s future, while also contributing as a professor at the Amsterdam Law School in either public international law, European law, or private international law. Candidates should bring extensive administrative experience, an international network, and a commitment to securing external funding for innovative research projects, as well as proficiency in research valorisation and effectively disseminating knowledge.
Candidates with limited Dutch language skills must possess a strong grasp of Dutch academic and administrative culture and be prepared to attain an advanced level of proficiency in the Dutch language within two years of starting, in line with their role’s demands and responsibilities.
